The 2010 Secrist Catalogs are due to arrive by the end of April. Watch for an announcement as soon as we receive them.. For those unfamiliar with the catalogs from Secrist Dolls, the publication is much more than a catalog. Collectible Newborn/Reborn Dolls vs. Play Dolls
The differences between dolls that are suitable for children to play with and collectible dolls are based on safety and playability.
Safety guidelines are based on age appropriateness and maturity level of the child. Some basic common sense guidelines for very young children consist of avoiding toys/dolls that are sharp and/or have small parts. In a nutshell, it's all in the stuffing, and we're not just talking turkey!
For instance, reborn or newborn dolls that are weighted to feel like a real baby usually contain stuffing materials such as plastic or glass pellets that could be dangerous if the doll's body ripped or was broken. These dolls are collectible and would not be appropriate for very young children.
Safety
- Sharp edges and points: Dolls that may break easily, such as porcelain, may expose sharp edges. Broken toys and pins or staples on doll's clothes and accessories may expose sharp point which can puncture a child.
- Small parts: Tiny toys or big toys with small removable parts can be swallowed or become lodged in a child's, ears or nose. Pay special attention on this if you have toddlers.
Playability Another important factor which should be considered in determining deciding whether a doll is a play doll or a collector doll is "playability". For most children a doll's value is less when it lacks function. In other words, children like dolls that can do more than stand on display. A doll that has playability will keep child's attention for a long period of time and stimulate the imagination.

- Some Berenguer dolls are suitable for play while others are considered collectible only.
- If you are making a doll from a kit, whether your doll comes out as a collectible or a play doll depends on the extent to which the finished product meets safety and playability guidelines appropriate for the age of the child. For example, Secrist doll kits normally have bodies that are stuffed with pellets in addition to polyfill in an attempt to produce a baby doll that feels real when it is held. Apple Valley doll kits, on the other hand, have the expressions of most older babies and toddlers so they do not necessarily end up looking like real life babies. Apple Valley dolls can be excellent play dolls when stuffed with polyfill.
- Secrist Doll kits come in unpainted and translucent vinyl. Apple Valley Doll Works kits come in both painted and unpainted versions. Most of them also come in translucent vinyl, as well as light and medium vinyl. The translucent vinyl is less opaque and slightly softer than the light or medium vinyls.
