Secrist Dolls: Tutorials/Catalogs

The 2010 Secrist Catalogs are due to arrive by the end of April. Watch for an announcement as soon as we receive them.. For those unfamiliar with the catalogs from Secrist Dolls, the publication is much more than a catalog. It includes reborning tutorials, and usually becomes a valuable part of a reborner's reference library.

Reborning vs. Newborning

Reborn or Newborn--What's the Difference?

REBORNING

Reborn artistry began with ready-made dolls.  Some of the most popular dolls used by reborn artists were those made by Berenguer because of their wonderful facial expressions, quality, and reasonable price.  Although there are many other dolls that make wonderful reborn dolls, Berenguer continues to be a popular choice for many.

The reborning process involves taking the doll apart, stripping off the factory paint, removing the eyelashes, and popping out the eyes. To make the doll feel like a real child, the head must be removed from the body in order to substitute one that can be weighted.  If the doll has a wig, it must be removed. If the doll has molded vinyl hair lines, the ridges will need to be sanded off if the doll is to have life-like rooted mohair.

Getting a ready-made doll ready to be "reborn" is a time-consuming process that can take a few hours or a few days.  Not only must the doll be disassembled and the vinyl prepped, a new body must be created.  However, it is essential that the proper steps be taken to provide a "blank canvas" from which to begin the creation process.  Taking shortcuts usually leads to a reborn that doesn't look like it is a real baby.

There are few methods to create a realistic-looking baby doll.  One of those ways is to take an existing, manufactured doll and "remake" it.  This is called "reborning."

NEWBORNING

A doll kit usually contains the major parts necessary to create the baby doll--limbs and head.  If no body is included, a source for obtaining bodies is usually recommended. Often times the newborn doll kit will come with high quality eyes like our Secrist dolls do.

Another way to create a life-like baby doll is to begin with a doll kit.  The word "newborn" was coined to distinguish this method from the "reborn" that begins with re-making a manufactured doll.

Doll kits give the artist a blank canvas and eliminate the task of un-doing the manufacturer's work.

There is usually a choice of limb style ranging from ¼ limbs to full vinyl limbs.  The vinyl parts are devoid of paint (unless a painted doll kit is chosen).  That means there is no need to remove previous paint or sand the head.

Although there is no such thing as a right or wrong method, care must be taken to avoid taking shortcuts that could compromise the quality of the end product.  A doll that looks like a real-life little person is an attainable result whether you start with a doll kit or a manufactured doll.

Please Note:
**Reborn dolls are hand-made, one-of-a-kind masterpieces, and they are not suitable as play dolls for children.
